Extra virgin olive oil may be used to treat Alzheimer’s disease. The findings were titled "Extra-virgin Olive Oils Improve cognition and Neurological Pathology in 3xTg Mice." Domenico Pratico (a professor of Pharmacology and Translational Medicine at The Center for Translational Medicine) published these findings.

This study also looked at the effect of extra virgin oil consumption on Alzheimer’s risk.

Recent studies have shown that Extra Virgin Olive Oil has brain-protective properties and is an antioxidant.

To demonstrate the main features and symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease, scientists used genetically engineered mice.

  • Memory impairment
  • Amyloid plaque buildup
  • Neurofibrillary Tangles

Amyloid plaque, a protein buildup in the brain, can lead to brain cell death.

There were two groups of mice created.

After six months, the mice were tested for cognitive performance.

Researchers found that mice who were fed extra-virgin oil rich diets had higher levels of peptides than those who were fed the base diet.

Brains had reduced tau phosphorylation and neuropathology.

These are all important features of Alzheimer's Disease. Study results showed that EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) had a positive effect.

The study was supported both by longitudinal positive data and cross-sectional positive information.
