American researchers recently discovered that a diet high in Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) , a key component to the Mediterranean Diet, can prevent memory loss and cognitive decline. This protects the brain against related conditions like:

  • Alzheimer's Disease
  • Dementia
  • Memory loss

Extra Virgin Olive Oil might be considered a therapeutic option for the prevention or halting of Alzheimer's disease.

The findings are called " Extra virgin olive oils improve cognition and neurological pathology in 3xTg mice. Role for autophagy ". They were published by Domenico Pratico, a professor of Pharmacology and Center for Translational Medicine.

It also examined the effect of extra virgin olive oil consumption on Alzheimer's disease incidence. The study examined the effect of oil on Alzheimer's disease symptoms in modified mice.

Recent research has shown that Extra Virgin Olive Oil's brain protection, phenolic compounds, and antioxidant properties can prevent age-related brain oxidation in mice. These studies focused only on one aspect the Alzheimer disease phenotype.

Amyloid plaque refers to a protein buildup in excess within the brain. This leads to a buildup in neurons. The protein tau, which is responsible for neurofibrillary tangles, gets twisted. This prevents the brain transporting essential nutrients, and causes brain cell death.

The mice were divided into two groups. One group was fed a standard diet while the other was given extra virgin olive oil from Apulia. Because it met strict quality standards, researchers chose this olive oil.

The mice were tested for cognitive performance after six months.

Researchers discovered that mice fed Extra Virgin Olive Oil rich diets had higher peptide levels than mice that were on the baseline diet

It also showed a reduction in tau phosphorylation, neuropathology, inflammation and pathology in the brains.

All of these are important characteristics of Alzheimer's disease. The study clearly and positively showed that EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil), had a positive influence. Researchers concluded that the study supports the positive longitudinal and cross-sectional data and, most importantly, the biological reasoning to suggest that Extra Virgin Olive Oil might be considered as a therapeutic option for preventing or halting Alzheimer’s disease. "

The Mediterranean diet has a number of health benefits, including lowering the risk of developing peripheral arterial disease, reducing sleep apnea and even increasing life expectancy

A new study by Sapienza University, Rome shows that Extra Virgin Olive Oil has a healthier effect on cholesterol and blood sugar than other fats.

The Mediterranean diet is a popular eating style found in many countries, including Spain, Italy and Morocco. It focuses primarily on whole grains, vegetables, fruits and low-fat dairy.

Extra virgin oil has been shown to help prevent heart disease. It is unclear how this works.

Researchers evaluated the health of the oil by adding 10 grams (approximately two tablespoons) Extra Virgin Olive Oil or 10 grams corn oil to a standard Mediterranean meal in 25 subjects who were not diabetic.

Participants were randomly given the option to either eat the meal with or without extra Virgin Olive Oil. The next month, participants were randomly chosen to either eat the meal with or without Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Two hours before and two hours after the meal, blood tests were done. The results showed that blood sugar levels rose less following the extra virgin olive oil meal (26.2% on average) than the meal with corn oil (40.7m/dl) or the meal without oil (53.6m/dl, on average span>

LDL (or "bad") cholesterol levels were also lower after meals with extra-virgin olive oil than when they were prepared with corn oil.

The study is not large but the researchers noted that it was the first to link lower cholesterol and blood sugar to Mediterranean diets with Extra virgin Olive Oil.
